Dholera International Airport: Opening Status and What Is Left (October 2026)

Dholera International Airport is one of the most-watched projects in the region. This update covers what officials have said, what remains and how buyers should read the opening date.
What Is the Latest Official Update?
On 14 July 2026, Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu reviewed the project on site. He was joined by Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, Airports Authority of India Chairman Vipin Kumar, and representatives of the Gujarat government and the airport consortium.
He said about 80% of the overall construction work was complete and set a target of September or October 2026 for starting operations. As of the latest statements I could find, I have not seen an official announcement that the licence has been issued or that commercial flights have begun. Please check the Ministry of Civil Aviation or AAI before relying on this page for the current date.
What Is Already Complete?
According to reports on the review:
The runway, taxiway and air traffic control tower are reported at 100% completion
Ancillary buildings are complete
The passenger terminal is about 75% complete
Remaining work is focused on systems integration and passenger services
Trade reports also describe a 25,000 sq m passenger terminal designed for around 2 million passengers a year. Treat these capacity figures as reported, not as final operating numbers.
What Is Still Pending?
The minister directed contractors to complete on-site work by September. In parallel, the ministry said it would work with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to obtain the airport licence within about three months of the review. An aerodrome licence is required before commercial flights can operate, so that licence is the real milestone to watch, more than the construction percentage.
Why Is This Airport Planned as an Aerotropolis?
The minister described Dholera as an aerotropolis, where the airport supports manufacturing and industrial investment as well as air travel. He also said:
Dholera is being developed as a multi-modal hub linked to a six-lane national highway and a high-speed rail corridor
Hangars are planned for maintenance, repair and overhaul of the C-295 transport aircraft
Dholera has been chosen for a final assembly line for a civilian aircraft, with a first roll-out targeted for 2028
How Have Airport Timelines Changed Over the Years?
Earlier targets were different. In October 2021, PTI reported that the airport would be operational by 2024, and AAI said it hoped to finish the first phase by December 2024. Large greenfield projects often shift, which is why a stated month should be treated as a target until the licence is issued.
